2. The Shadow

   One of the attempted revivals of old Pulp heroes in the 90s, the Alec Baldwin Shadow movie, as much as I love it, does have an insane madness for it, including a pre Gandalf, pre-Magneto Ian McCelan. I had a VHS, did a VHS transfer, got the DVD, but couldn't get rid of previously mentioned transfer. Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb...

   The acting, the singing and the continuity. It's a triple threat! Made for $175,000. In 1966 hotels had pass keys! A Jerry Van Dyke impersonator who looks nothing like him. An acid trip in a Hampton Inn hallway.

4. The Brain

   It's a 1988 Canadian "movie" about a giant brain with a face and big snarly teeth. It eats people and rats. It wants to control your mind... somehow. Too bad it can't make the acting better. This is an amazing pile of gooey badness that is perfect Rifftrax fodder!

6. A Christmas Story 2 (2012)

   The 1983 classic A Christmas Story wasn't the first adaptation of Jean Shepherd's writings--PBS did some adaptations in the late seventies/early eighties. (In fact, if you do a YouTube search for "Phantom of the Open Hearth" you'll see the very first version of the leg lamp!) Nor was it the last--PBS did another adaptation in 1988 (Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss) and in 1994, there was a (very limited) theatrical release of It Runs In The Family (renamed My Summer Story for video), which was actually billed as the sequel to ACS. Whatever you may think of these two follow-ups/sequels (and many do enjoy them), they're worthy to be called sequels because they both come directly from Jean Shepherd's writings and feature his narration.

   Not so with the so-called "official" sequel--2012's direct-to-DVD A Christmas Story 2. This has nothing to do with anything Shepherd wrote and is merely an exploitative cash grab that fans saw through in a heartbeat.

   The movie takes place in 1946, with Ralphie now fifteen years old and his brother Randy around eleven. In a blatant re-tread of the original movie's plot, Ralphie's heart's desire this Christmas is his first car (that, and the love of the prettiest girl in school). What's more, the movie re-hashes story beats and jokes from the first one--some of them lifted clean! (For example: Flick sticking his tongue into a mail tube for no apparent reason than to call back to the flagpole, a re-tread of "Oh, fudge!", Ralphie dropping hints about his gift at the breakfast table...sometimes it seems this movie is jumping up and down, waving its arms, and yelling, "Look! Look! We're calling back to the first movie! See?! SEE?!?!?!")

   The acting talent among most of the cast is all right but nothing to shout about. Daniel Stern and Beverly D'Angelo play Ralphie's folks, which could have been good, but Stern especially simply tries to copy Darren McGavin's performance without putting his own stamp on it. (And does it WAY too exaggeratedly.)

   That's one of the main failings of ACS2--it just TRIES too hard. Instead of the wry, gentle humor that characterizes Jean Shepherd's work, it goes for cartoony, slapstick, and farcical. (And the slapstick sequences seem more along the lines of The Three Stooges on steroids rather than the subtler humor of the first movie.) Even when ACS touched on the cartoony and over-the-top, the characters were grounded in reality--they just seemed real and relatable. This movie seems like nothing more than a live-action Hanna-Barbera cartoon (to the point where they actually dub in Hanna-Barbera-ish cartoon sound effects over certain slapstick sequences!).

   There's still narration by adult Ralphie...but since Shepherd had passed away long ago (and I can't see him giving his stamp of approval to this if he HAD been alive), there's a different voice actor. He's trying desperately to sound like Shep, but sounds more like Adam West after too much coffee.

   In short, this would be a Rifftrax field day for the holidays...perhaps for a Rifftrax Live. (Ironically, the same year, another adaptation of ACS came out...the stage musical. But with wit, genuineness and a great score, it served the source material much better.)

7. Final Hour / Sidste Time

   This one was super popular with my friends and I - and I am not sure we ever found out what's really (or not?) happening in this movie. It's a 1995 danish B-Movie - but one we love - and maybe you should give it a go.

9. Playing for Keeps (1984)

   Dishonorable mention for Harvey Weinstein's terrible movie. I don't expect it to get any riffing treatment but Mr. Weinstein does at least need to be further embarrassed for he is a bloody monster.

   This placemarker is to indicate that he is a terrible individual as well as a terrible director (alongside his brother Bob who maybe a better human than his sibling).

19. Space Patrol aka Planet Patrol1962 (TV Series)

    This series is also known by its US title Planet Patrol to avoid confusion with the 1950s American live-action series of the same name. The marionettes used in the series incorporated some elements of Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation technique - specifically their mouths would move in synch with dialogue.

    The series is set in the year 2100, by which time the indigenous and autonomous civilizations on Earth, Mars and Venus have banded together to form the United Galactic Organization (UGO). Space Patrol is the UGO's military wing, and the series follows the actions of this interplanetary force, focusing on the missions of a tiny unit led by the heroic, bearded Captain Larry Dart. The humanoids in his crew consist of the elfin Slim from Venus, and the stocky, ravenously sausage-mad Husky from the Red Planet, Mars. The imperfect Slavic accent variants and six-pointed star chest emblems of these two may have been a sly nod to the Jewish-Russian heritage of the English series creator/writer. These men would regularly use one of two interplanetary space vehicles, the Galisphere 347 and the Galisphere 024.

    Providing technical support on Earth is the brilliant and inventive Irishman Professor Aloysius O’Brien O’Rourke Haggarty,[1] called "Pop" by his daughter Cassiopeia, to his perpetual dismay. Haggarty's garrulous pet Martian "parrot" (a Gabblerdictum bird), taught to talk in "The Slaves of Neptune" episode, accompanies the crew on rare occasions. Keeping them all on a tight rein are Colonel Raeburn and his super-efficient Venusian secretary, Marla, both also based on Earth.

    The show reflected sex roles characteristic of the culture and era which produced it, but blonde and brainy Marla would often explicitly point out that "There are no dumb blondes on Venus." Indeed, the series was created and written by the prolific polymath artist Roberta Leigh, the first woman producer in Britain to have her own film company. -Wikipedia

    Crude by today's standards, these Space Patrol episodes, which last about 15 minutes and are in black and white, are interesting to watch as the creators did a great job making this very unique series, with puppets, on a shoestring budget.

    Space Patrol would make for some fun riffing, as long as we aren't able to see the riffer's strings while they are doing the actual riffing.

20. Robocop 1-2-3 & the Reboot

    Would be fun to see just how many "Dick" Jones jokes you can you can lower the tone with, or try to avoid lol. Plus to be fair Robo 3 and the reboot are just asking to be "Rip" Torn a new one.

    "I'd buy that for a Dollar" - Although if it has Robert John Burke in it, I think a quarter will be more than generous.

    Robocop (2013) - Part man, Part machine, All PG13 crap.

    Cain's brain jar - This is what happens when you leave last last pickle in the jar just that bit too long.
