  3. Sentimental Journey

Sentimental Journey is a depressing short starring James Stewart as Joe, the old WWII pilot who decides to take a casual night stroll on the tarmac to discover his beloved DC-3 plane filled with cargo, as it's now considered obsolete for carrying passengers. When he boards the plane as it's left unattended, his mind wanders to audible flashbacks of "fonder" days. The man who is responsible for the plane hands him a stick of gum, just what anyone would possibly need to cure the existential blues. It's completely unremarkable, but filled with rather colorful voices during Joe's flashback, this short…

  4. Harryhausen's fairy tale adaptations

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen made Fairy Tale adaptation shorts and I wondered if you would riff them. They're Mother Goose Stories, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Story of King Midas, Hansel and Gretel, and the tortoise and the hare.

  5. Crack That Tank

Have you ever wondered how to take out a tank from the World War II era? Do you have a dame in Brooklyn? Do you refer to setting other people ablaze with Molotov Cocktails as "buying them a drink"?

Then brother, this short is for you!

Marvel at the absolute awkwardness of an actor pretending to be... I don't know, maybe a mafioso that got drafted? He certainly talks more like someone from Goodfellas than Saving Private Ryan. Perhaps "swagger" is also a requirement for cracking open a tank.

Except no tanks actually get cracked open in this short. But…

  6. A Body to Die For: The Aaron Henry Story

A half hour episode from the 90's HBO 'Lifestories' series, enjoyed (and adored) by countless students in health class.

Sit back and relax as Ben Affleck takes you through the journey of star football player to roid-raging meat man.

  8. Apaches (English Safety Film.)

Yes! It's the infamous English nasty safety film-for kids! You think Shake Hands With Danger isn't graphic enough? Is seeing a bunch of kids dying in monkey masks not good enough for you either? Then Apaches is just for you! See a bunch of icky ****** goblins dress up in borderline offensive Native American 60s (?) Garb and get into hijinks on a farm...which all end in death! Be on the lookout for one dumb kid that drowns in a pool of manure! You can't make this stuff up! Actually...a scriptwriter high on cow ***** and English Gruel did! So...if…

  9. Slingblade

Lucas black is the little boy, Billy Bob Thornton is the main character "Carl".
This would be a good one to riff.

  10. Metrics for Primary: How Big is Big?

This educational short teaches kids about metric measurements in liters and volume; which sounds like a nice idea, if not for the fact that this short contains puppets that would make Jim Henson shake his head in disgust (or scream in horror).

Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70k9gBICVQU and skip to 32:11.

  11. Dungeons Dragons TV Series (1983-1985, 27 Episodes)

Dungeons Dragons TV Series (1983-1985, 27 Episodes) There are several episodes that would make great riffing material. And 24-minute run times make them perfect shorts!

  12. Hell-Bent For Election (1944)

Something different from animator Chuck Jones: an allegorical PSA about voting for FDR. It's actually quite good (one of the first cartoons from the studio that became UPA), but very "old timey," and those always are good for riffing.

  13. Advertising: What it's Doing to your Life, with Blonde Ronald Reagan. AKA Anyone who hates ads is more evil than the commies.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8cqk0uIuso

This educational/indoctrination short is a blend of lectures and old advertisements that lays it on thick

Advertising is equated with: more money for government services thru taxes, the development of new cake mixes, a means to keep Kruschev from burying us, and a way for married men to stare at women so they can feel better about loveless marriages.

Last but not least, if you don't support advertising than a little kid with cerebral palsy will never be able to walk normally. Do you want that on your conscious?!?

  14. This is Ceder Crest (1954): It's a 25 minute tour of a woman's college

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6EJAgFuw74

I'm on the fence about suggesting this because it feels like a slog, but maybe that'd make for a solid two-parter riff?

The short itself is a 25-minute promo for a woman's college in 1954 with each scene not lasting for much more than 30 seconds. The only person who talks other than the narrator is the college's president.

  15. New world thru chemistry 1939 with audio from New world thru chemistry 1936

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy7zrtFeuwU

Someone posted a youtube video that uses video from one short and audio from another. Sometimes the audio and the video work well enough together. Other times it goes off the rails. E.g., a waiter spills wine on a woman's blouse while explosions play. Wallpaper is printed while the narrator talks about using coal and ammonia to make fertilizer for farms. It'd make for a hell of a riff.

  18. An Outbreak of Salmonella/An Outbreak of Staphylococcus (US Short Films, 1954)

Basically, these are films that were created by the United States Department of Health created in the 1950s created in a series of videos showcasing to people how diseases are caused and spread through incompetence. Honestly, the National Library of Medicine's YouTube account is a goldmine of historical videos showcasing somewhat archaic short films with advice that can now be regarded as dubious (particularly in the field of mental health).

The only issue, though, is that Staphylococcus... is the scientific name for staph infections, and that short film doesn't really have the unintentional humor of people running for the bathroom.…

We watched this for driver's ed. It is excessively musical and poorly acted, with random animated scenes. Need I say more?
