I saw this on some cable channel in the early 1980's, and it's a martial arts movie which takes itself *way* too seriously. It includes several notable actors. IMDB says it's an R-rated film, but the version I saw might have a few scenes removed. The main thing I remember is the main character walking through a lot of sand, and meeting a lot of goofy characters who were trying to say profound things.
There was a second character in the film who was also searching for knowledge, and once he finally gets to the very last step he chickens out. And then David Carradine's character gets to the very last step, he does *NOT* chicken out, he opens The Book, and ends up laughing and walking away. I won't give it away, but note that "The Book" is really just a single "page".
I don't think I've seen the film since the mid-1980's, but I remember watching this with some of my friends and we were basically riffing on it, because it just begs to be riffed.
