Better exposition here, John Ritter plays a struggling actor (Steve Nichols) who ends up promoting a local superhero film, Captain Avenger (I kid you not!). While visiting a local mom and pop store to get some cash, Steve inadvertently prevents a robbery, becoming an overnight sensation.

As dorky as Ritter's superhero "costume" indisputably is... his dad still wore goofier outfits nightly, on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.

John Ritter had the lean, muscled body of a born TV action hero.
Unfortunately, that action hero was H.R. Pufnstuf.
