The War of the Worlds (1953)
Before there was a Dr. Clayton Forrester tormenting our SOL-stranded heroes from the bowels of Deep 13, there was another Dr. Clayton Forrester who battled (pompously and ineffectively) against a horde of Martian invaders. The Martians proved immune to guns, heavy artillery, and even nuclear weapons. But apparently, they could be prayed to death. Best known today for being a precursor to other, bigger budget ripoffs of H.G. Wells' science-fiction masterpiece in 1996 (Independence Day) and 2005 (L. Ron Hubbard vs. Mars).

I would love to see this movie riffed. It is my favorite classic sci-fi movie. I re-watch it several time a year. My fondest memory of this film is from 1973 when, at 9 years old, I watched it one night with my dad on a little, portable color TV. It was the first time I'd seen the movie. It was presented by horror host "Moona Lisa" on a show called "Moona's Midnight Madness". I think it was on KMOX channel 4 (CBS) in St. Louis, MO. I sat up through the whole movie and when it ended, it was the latest I'd ever stayed up in my life... 1:00 AM! I was so pleased that the Mike, Bill, & Kevin recently did "Invaders From Mars", another beloved classic that I discovered much later in my adult years. PLEASE do War Of The Worlds. Without this movie, MST3K wouldn't have Clayton Forrester. Why was this not riffed years ago?

Actually, the hilarious part I liked was when the guys approach the Martian craft which has just crash-landed because THAT'S always a good idea as opposed to heading for the hills. Watch as these yokels get vaporized for attempting to communicate with the laser weapon rather than notify the authorities... apparently we're not dealing with rocket scientists here.

I had to watch scenes of this for one college class. And all I could think of was, "How am I supposed to take this seriously when Paul Frees is playing the somber on the scene reporter?"
HECK YES Rifftrax should do this one!
