Red Dwarf USA
The plot from the Red Dwarf wiki, “Red Dwarf USA, also referred to as Dwarfing USA, was a project undertaken in 1992. The project was a collaboration between Rob Grant and Doug Naylor of Grant Naylor Productions, the original co-creators and writers of the British franchise Red Dwarf, with various American producers and studios. The ultimate goal of the project was to create a new version of the television series, for airing on U.S. television. Although two pilot episodes were made, they were not picked up, and the project ultimately never came to fruition. Grant and Naylor, themselves not satisfied with the two pilots, declared the project a failure.”
This unaired pilot is very similar to the Star Wars Holiday Special in three major respects…
1.) It was made to cash in on a popular franchise: at the time this special was made, Red Dwarf was already in its fifth season, and was at the height of its popularity in both the UK and the US, and networks like NBC and Universal Studios were interested in cashing in on their own version.
2.) It has a negative reputation among both the fans and those who’ve worked on it: the show’s creators Rob Grant and Doug Naylor had issues with the US pilot, with Grant leaving because of studio interference. Not only that, but years later when interviewed about it, Craig Bierko made a point to apologize for the pilot, saying while he is a fan of the original UK version, with regards to making a pilot for over in the states that "America crapped on it". And even Craig Charles, the actor who plays Lister in the original UK version has had some words to say about it, also.
3.) It’s should have never seen the light of day, but somehow has: as of me writing this, there has been no official release of the original Red Dwarf USA pilot, or the second attempt at making the pilot for that matter. All that exists are bootleg copies that have found their way to the internet.
Only downside to having this as a riff is that the pilot is about 30 minutes long, though if they also riffed the second attempt at a pilot, which is honestly just scenes from the original UK show reenacted by the Red Dwarf USA actors, it might be able to get to that one hour mark, but I can’t be certain.
