The Spy With My Face (1965)
As you probably know when The Man from UNCLE launched it wanted to be called Ian Flemming's Napoleon Solo but the James Bond people stopped that from happening. It was always the underdog with limited budget. What it had going for it was the talents of the late Robert Vaughn and the indomitable David McCallum. As it was the 60's and TVs weren't as ubiquitous as they are today there were several "Affairs" that were released theatrically and also aired as two part episodes. The Spy With My Face is one such release. On its own it amazes. Here is why it should be riffed.
The lead actors (legitimately talented) fully commit to a story and premise that is wafer thin.
Budget and technology lead to interesting camera angles and a few scenes where the Spy of the title is out in public with his face fully wrapped in bandages a la invisible Man.
There is a magic doorway that causes a man to pirouette to his death.
Pick up sticks are used as a security device
It would be a fitting tribute to the much loved Robert Vaughn.
TV Quality fight scenes. 60's TV.
As I said, it amazes. On the one hand it's not good at all. On the other the actors as much loved and perform well despite the context. Then there are the other actors, and the plot holes, it's a glorious hot mess and I love it.
This was an MGM release
