Nocturna: Granddaughter of Dracula (1979)
Nocturna, the titular granddaughter of Dracula, moves from Transylvania to New York to follow a dishy guitarist from a disco band that played at her grandfather's hotel.
Nai Bonet gets a story credit for this film, as well as producing and starring. The professional bellydancer had previously had a hit scopitone with the song "Jelly Belly" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9gA4o6Zplw), and wanted to parlay her success into a full media takeover. Funded from mysterious (and possibly legally questionable) sources, most of the budget went into getting some of the biggest disco stars to contribute to the soundtrack. Unfortunately, the vampire disco musical came on the tail end of the disco craze and sank like a stone.
– Features John Carradine as the elderly Count Dracula.
– Yvonne De Carlo as Jugulia Vein, who complains that the quality of blood is deteriorating in the cities thanks to preservatives in the food, and pushes the idea of vampires "coming out of the coffin."
– Performance artist Brother Theodore turns in a truly unbelievable performance as a caretaker with a creepy, obsessive crush on his boss. He chews every single word as though it were the greatest delicacy, creating facial expressions that should be physically impossible.
– Did I mention the incredibly expensive disco soundtrack? Featuring Gloria Gaynor's "Love is Just a Heartbeat Away" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS8GVpRBDVE), Moment of Truth's "Love at First Site" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwrjJGZv4xA), and contributions from the Heaven 'n' Hell Orchestra.
