CBS Children's Film Festival: The Chiffy Kids (1976-1980)
Up next with my Fangarian offerings from the CCFF to be riffed was from an actual children's series from Britain. The best way to begin this suggestion is with a variation of the bizarre theme song itself:
The Chiffy Kids, The Chiffy Kids,
Who the hell are the Chiffy Kids, anyway?
It's a bit cliche, possibly lax,
Here's why it should be on RiffTrax...
The Chiffy Kids...
(Okay, might be out of tune with the lyrics, but let's get this show on the road..)
Side note: when CBS first aired the two shorts, they got in trouble with viewers for not providing the intro. Mainly because the singers where singing so fast the 'abridged' theme, people thought they were calling them the Shitty Kids. Which would've made the show a bit more interesting..)
So what was The Chiffy Kids? Well, this was Britain's answer to the wild 'kid craze' which plagued family entertainment in the Seventies.
One of the things about the Seventies when it came to this fare, was producers went with three choices: (1) Wild puppetry/stop-motion characters; (2) Animation; or (3) 'The Little Rascals' schtick.
And The Chiffy Kids decided to go with choice number three. Except here it's more like 'The Little Rascals' meet 'Top Cat,' because the members apparently have unique skills that you'd think an adult would have.
Basically the adventures these kids have are usually normal.. (well, if you call fixing a Snail Race, and entering a Pancake race, NORMAL) with unexpected results. The kids are usually endearing and have a plethora of characters. So why on earth would you want to riff that?
Mainly because the antics the kids get themselves into would usually be something you'd see the comedy classics like 'Laurel & Hardy' get into, and the fact The Chiffy Kids live in the same dimension where there are no adults around when they are orchestrating their schemes.
And the fact despite the 'Lucy/Ethel' situations they end up getting themselves into, they always seem to work things out. Even the RiffTrax crew would have to suspend disbelief at the episodes.
So here are the three reasons why this series should be riffed:
(1) The hilarious theme song: Everyone knows in the 60s and 70s, shows had catchy tune, but what makes The Chiffy Kids' theme memorable is the fact the lyrics actually puts down each of the characters, no seriously, if you can locate an unedited version of the Chiffy Kids, listen to the lyrics carefully, the singers indicate each members' faults, except for the youngest member, Magpie (who is the most annoying character in the series, but somehow gets the ball rolling in these episodes, go fig.).
(2) The wild episodes themselves: as I said, producers used to think you could take something from 'The Little Rascals,' and 'I Love Lucy,' and put it with kids to make it hilarious. But what I find interesting is the episodes sometimes come off more as Charlie Brown, because though you do see adults from time to time, for the majority of the episodes, you rarely see them about when The Chiffy Kids are doing things you'd never see kids doing by themselves... except possibly on Safety Woman or other educational films.
(3) The inexplicable things these kids do in these episodes. Case in point: in the Great Snail Race, as the kids are 'training' their snails (which was instigated by Magpie who was claiming her snail was fast.. as if that's possible) one comes up with a 'motorized' lettuce (piece of lettuce spinning round a snail) because he heard the way they train greyhounds is with a motorized rabbit (yeah, some aren't quite the sharpest of the bunch here). Meanwhile some of the bullies decide they'll cheat with a metallic 'snail' (of course, more like 'slug') and a magnet (yeah, like that's going to fool anyone, as I said, not the sharpest knives in the drawer). But in the end, things somehow work out, even though you'll be damned to know how exactly.. oh, you,Chiffy Kids..
Overall, this would be something I'd like to see the RiffTrax Crew tackle, even with Mary Jo and Bridget because these are classic short films of the ludicrous kind.
Now regrettably, though I've found some Chiffy Kids episodes, they are only short clips I've been able to find for the series. But even a smattering should show you exactly why these episodes should be riffed... enjoy!

Awesome! It is such an informative post. I needed this as my kids are going to visit their grandma in vacations. I also feel lucky that I was able to get all the information about Andy Yeatman on https://www.longviewmediagroup.com/who-we-are/ and now, his shows are on top in the watch list. This will be an entertaining and educating vacation for the kids.

I've watched the clips- these children are so boring and annoying, it seems like the kind of show you'd just have on while you did other stuff- nothing about it was catchy or something I'd watch on purpose- but if you're British and you grew up with this, it might be more nostalgic for you than someone who's not seen it at all- that being said, they could probably do a riff- if they put the clips together- I doubt any whole episode would be any more fraught with opportunities than the clips!
