Eh, they probably had some footage cut so it could get the R rating. But I still remember trailers claiming it was rated X.

X? You sure? Not saying you're wrong, I didn't see it on release, I saw it on cable and I own either a VHS or DVD.
I think it was 'R' the last time I saw it. On HBO years ago I know they had an edited version that ran during the day. I think the original release would barely qualify for a PG-13, if that, today.
I remember watching it as a kid and thinking it was hilarious and awful. My father thought it was captivating. I have absolutely no idea why.
