    Added bonus: sound effects recycled from War of the Worlds and Forbidden Planet. This film was made while Kubrick was working on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Good for riffs like, “Oh, Kubrick totally ripped that off. That’s where he got the idea for....” The special effects are terrible, the story is stupid, the sets look like a student studio TV production—mission control is a small room with maybe six people, the dialogue is dreadful. It’s got all the hallmarks of an AIP film, cheapness high up on the Frank Zappa Cheapness scale. There’s a lot of walking so it’s not like you’d have to squeeze the jokes in. Clearly by this point in his career Dennis Hopper had taken a lot of LSD. A lot of it is laughable enough that you don’t even have to write that many gags.
