3. National Geographic: Email Order Bride

   OK. Saw this on Netflix. Nat Geo has this documentary about dudes getting wives from Russia. It might be a bit mean to riff...but the entire time I was watching this, I kept imagining you guys ripping these people and process apart. TOTALLY understand if you pass on this documentary. However, I think it could be hilarious.

5. Michael Isn't With Us Anyone (guessing on the title)

   Traffic Safety/Stranger Danger Film. And no, it's not what Rifftrax would say if it gave Mike his walking papers, but rather an interesting look at a film that attempts to warn us about running out into the street. But somehow also meanders into stranger danger for some curious reason.

   Basically the tale starts off at school where the teacher acknowledges a student (Michael) is absent. Rather than tell the class Mike's no more, because apparently children obviously have no concept of death, she stretches it out that Mike's not just coming back, hence the alleged name of the film. Anyway, the kids who were with Michael 'remember' how their classmate met his demise.

   Now the funny thing about this safety short (from my memory), is the fact the kids aren't ACTUALLY playing in the streets (as the ones who did in Live and Learn). Instead they're running in a stupor down sidewalks, running across intersections with reckless abandonment, when Mike gets hit by car stock footage (seriously), then is felled (completely clean I might add) where suddenly a crowd forms. Then like magic a cop arrives inquiring what happens.

   Cut back to the school, where a sad-eyed girl says the obvious "we were playing in the streets," whereas you're wondering where the hell did the crowd spring from, let alone the cop? But as with most safety films riffed here, they immediately go into the typical safety rules to prevent what happened to poor Michael.

   Yet, as I said, the film tends to meander off-topic into stranger danger. Why? Well, in the late 70s, some brilliant producers thought fifteen minutes simply wasn't enough for educating children on life's dangers, so they started extending some films to thirty minutes (oh, rapture!). And the funny thing about this film, like all other stranger danger films, the stranger looks NOTHING like what you should be looking out for, and when they demonstrate, he smiles at a child and says, 'Hello.' Whereas, 'go get an adult' must come off as 'freak out and head for the hills,' because that's what she does.

   Hopefully the description can help you locate this short (though 'short' is an understatement with this film), because this one has been long overdue for a good riffing.

8. The Secret of NIMH

   Mrs. Brisby (Frisby in the original book) is a very shy, timid, and lonely mouse widow whose family is threatened by a premature warm spell, prompting the farmer to start his mowing early, endangering the cinder block she and her family call home. Normally she would simply pack up their things and move to a new spot in the field, but her younger son Timothy is too ill to be moved, forcing her to seek another alternative before it's too late. With the push of her local confidante, the Shrew, and the aid of a clumsy, love lorn crow named Jeremy, she goes to see the Great Owl, who, upon learning that she is the widow of a mouse named Jonathan Brisby, advises her to seek the aid of the mysterious rats who live in the rosebush outside the farmer's house. There, Mrs. Brisby learns of her deceased husband's past, and the secret of these rats, the Rats of NIMH, who agree to move her home before they abandon their underground colony for Thorn Valley, but Mrs. Brisby herself is endangered by the evil machinations of Jenner, a power hungry rat who seeks to overthrow the rats' leader Nicodemus so as to keep the rats in their underground colony, and will go so far as to endanger Mrs. Brisby's children to achieve his goals. Only Justin, the rats' gallant, Errol Flynn like captain of the guard, stands between Jenner and Mrs. Brisby, who must call upon the same courage her husband had if she is to save her family.

18. Hardboiled 1992

    Hard Boiled (Lat Sau San Taam (辣手神探), or "God of Guns") is a critically-acclaimed action film by John Woo, starring Chow Yun-fat in his slightly younger years. This 1992 action classic has aged very gracefully, and boasts action very few contemporary films can match up to.

    Golden Riff scenes:

    • Chow Yun-Fat looking like a 90s Smooth Jazz artist. When he's not mowing down countless bad guys, Tequila (Chow Yun-Fat) relaxes by playing jazz clarinet.
    • The coded message scenes have a bad case of Engrish. One of the characters sends codes to the police by sending flowers to Teresa (Teresa Mo), a police secretary and Tequila's on-again, off-again girlfriend, with the message on the card. Before it's decoded, the message on the first card reads, "Are you somewhere feeling lonely/Or is someone loving you?", which is a lyric from Lionel Richie's "Hello". They're all from well-known love songs.
    • Tequila holds a baby in one arm and sings a lullaby to him while gunning down incoming Mooks with his other arm. Later, said baby urinated on his pant leg, dousing the fire which ignited on Tequila's pants.
